Popeye Doyle (Gene Hackman), a New York cop, travels to Marseilles with the intent of tracking down Charnier (Fernando Rey), the mastermind behind a notorious drug smuggling operation. This pursuit stems from Doyle's previous failure to capture Charnier in 'The French Connection'.

Tragically, Doyle finds himself kidnapped by the very dealers he is seeking to apprehend. While held captive, he is forcibly injected with heroin, leaving him newly addicted to the very substance he had vowed to eradicate. Before Doyle can even consider exacting his revenge, he must first overcome this unexpected and debilitating drug dependency.

Determined to shake off his newfound addiction, Doyle embarks on a grueling journey of self-rehabilitation, fighting through the physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms that threaten to consume him.
